Die Opbou van Afbreek / The Construction of Destruction

The metaphor of the caravan forms part of my art vocabulary as an apt vehicle of contradictive meaning. In the same way does my construct of Africa. Therefore, the two motifs are merged to become the hybrid dwelling that it is. Movement and stagnation, progression and regression, attraction and repulsion, as well as seriousness and play are some binaries relevant in the exploration of the underlying concept of the work.

Furthermore, I am deconstructing and reconstructing nostalgia for Africa. The reference to caravan and Africa allow nostalgia towards an exploration, a holiday adventure, elevated by the discovery of an unknown destination that grants a sense of uncertainty and freedom. This journey or imaginative escapism is ultimately in search for paradise and in longing of a personal utopia. Or does the artwork represent nostalgia for a journey never taken or a paradise lost?

The African caravan is an embodiment of our collective thinking, a collective dwelling on wheels. To be motionless and still renders it stagnant and regressive, but on the move it is functional, accumulative and progressive.
