Willem Boshoff - Compass Rose

Compass Rose

Primarily a ‘language artist’, Willem Boshoff makes images, sculptures and installations inspired by words. Compass Rose, constructed from stone, radiates outward indicating direction, accompanied by the appropriate directional degree. Here, he creates a lyricism that transcends the scientific methods with which we navigate the world. As with a compass, this is a signpost that encompasses the globe yet is restricted in its abstract signifiers: its code words. We create codes in our continual attempts to cut up and rationalize the world, so that its mysteries – and in turn our uncertainties and doubts – are erased or diminished and made easier to handle. In this piece, the code and the marble on which it is inscribed become something esoteric, something mantra-like that hints at the spiritual. This piece is an acknowledgement that the world is, indeed, much bigger than us.
