Sue Pam Grant - Swimmer No. 5

The swimmer is a recurring motif in multidisciplinary visual artist Sue Pam Grant’s work, appearing in a variety of media including assemblage, collage, print and video. However, Swimmer No 5 is her first sculptural representation of this iconic image. As part of her creative process, Sue Pam Grant is constantly exploring and excavating her memories and experiences to present a highly personalised visual narrative. Standing on a starting block, the life-sized figure of a woman swimmer represents a universal image of the female form. Part depiction of the artist’s mother and part self-portrait, Swimmer No 5 embodies the artist’s childhood experiences of fear and anticipation – standing on the edge of what lies ahead – as well as her current reflections as an adult, wife and mother on these earlier preoccupations.

Die swemmer is ’n herhalende motief in Sue Pam Grant se werk in verskeie media soos collages, drukwerk, video’s. Swemmer no 5 is egter haar eerste beeldhouwerk.
